When you visit Yogyakarta, Indonesia, one thing comes to mind: street food!
They are abundant in Yogya, especially in Malioboro. Arguably the most famous spot in Yogyakarta. Located in the hart of the city, lots of street food vendors selling their mouth craving, delicious foods daily, from day to night.
Once you alight from the train at Tugu Station, the main train station in Yogya, just walk to the east, less then 5 minutes you’ll arrive at Jalan Malioboro. Foods, shops and local vibes will welcome you.
If you ask local which street food you HAVE TO TRY in Malioboro, probably they’ll answer Lumpia Samijaya. Located ±7 minutes walk from the start of Malioboro, walk past the Malioboro mall, in front of Hotel Mutiara Malioboro and Samijaya Shop-hence the name; Samijaya. It become unofficial name of this vendor, even though they don’t have any name or signage.
Been there since 1976, with small white wooden cart. Since then, people willing to queue for hours just to get a bite, from 8am to 9pm! Filled with shredded chicken and veggies, mostly bean sprouts and carrots, you can choose standard (IDR5K/$3.5) or special with quail eggs (IDR6K/$4). Usually they deep fried them untul the color change into golden brown. But you can also order “lumpia basah’ or unfried ones.

You can order as much as you want, and eat it right away. Just sit anywhere around the cart. I prefer took it away, since at that time too many people queing there. They topped it with shredded garlic and cengek (chilli pepper) for more kick.
It’s crispy on the outside and delicious inside. The seasoning is not too overpower, just the right amount of umami.
