Then I begun to design the layout and the facade. I sent it via email then my cousin had commented about the design. His wife wants the facade to be minimalist. They talked about the style that I still not recognized well. Minimalist was the style i always applied to my design, but actually I don’t really get what the point of this style, and why people really like their house to be in minimalist style.
This style as you know is adopted from western but that’s ok. Local architects had made it combined with some local elements. But the term minimalist in building design is in fact not to try to be a humble design. This style seems to show its superiority from its minimalist style compare to surrounding buildings. I think it’s become too naive and brought me to question about the real spirit of minimalist which spearheaded by Mies Van Der Rohe, Phillip Johnson or Le Corbusier.
My cousin’s wife though she wants it minimalist, she reminds me to be careful with the design due to the traditional surrounding. I respect this kind of client I must say. because she is belong to that place and don’t want her house to be more dominant than others as minimalist houses do nowadays. This give me another design problem to focus on. Finally it brings me back to a sense of the humble spirit of minimalist in early days which to be open and connected to surrounding (through material or else) instead of being secluded to the neighborhood. I think that’s what Phillip Johnson thought when he built his glass house.
